Kaniyoor Krishna Iyer

Kaniyoor Krishna Iyer is the legendary founder of the fortune of one of the richest families in Kozhumam, near Coimbatore. As Paatti tells the story, he was a rich and powerful man, who used to be fond of hunting. One day, he went out hunting with his close friend and came across a tiger which attacked them. Krishna iyer panicked and ran away, abandoning his faithful friend. The tiger mauled the poor man and killed and ate him. There was so little left of the body that they only found his little finger, and the last rites were performed with just that.

The widow of this loyal brahmin friend of the rich Krishna Iyer was so angry with him for abandoning his friend and not making any effort to save him from the tiger - she then placed 'the' curse on the family - wishing that all of the great wealth would be dissipated and that there would be no male heirs in the next generation to inherit. The curse apparently came true - Krishna Iyer's grandson died at an early age, and his son died at the age of 15. Krishna Iyer's son Periasami adopted his grandson, Ganapathisubramanian, who turned out to be retarded. He was married off to Kamala, who then achieved control of the fortune - which then was distributed among her relatives and then gradually disappeared.
